THE Sir Roden Cutler Wheelchair Roll came to Queanbeyan on Monday, bringing with it a message of understanding. The Wheelchair Roll came to town as part of a state-wide tour to raise awareness about the challenges and difficulties faced by people confined to a wheelchair. The Roll was met by Queanbeyan City Council at the Queanbeyan Conference Centre Hall, where an obstacle course was put together for people to try out their skills in a wheelchair. The course required people to manoeuvre between cones and throw balls to finish the course in the best time. Councillor Tom Mavec spoke on behalf of the council at the event. "It is great to see the charity expanding it's efforts to concentrate on the rural community," he said. "Sir Roden had a particular affinity for the rural community and it is wonderful to see so many worthwhile activities taking place in his name." The Wheelchair Roll charity also donated $500 to the Home in Queanbeyan cause during their stop over. Sir Roden Cutler was NSW's thirty-second governor and the state's longest serving, beginning on January 20, 1966 and ending on January 19, 1991. Sir Roden was also the man who signed the form recognising Queanbeyan as a City in 1972. |
